Eastern Greenland Summer Time (EGST)

Note: As of 2024, EGT and EGST have been discontinued, with this region now adopting Western Greenland Time (WGT, UTC−2) and Western Greenland Summer Time (WGST, UTC−1) to ensure consistent timekeeping across all of Greenland.

UTC Offset: UTC +0

Eastern Greenland Summer Time (EGST) operated at UTC+0 as the daylight saving time observed in eastern Greenland, particularly in the Ittoqqortoormiit area. Sometimes simply called "East Greenland Daylight Time," EGST served as the summer counterpart to Eastern Greenland Time (EGT, UTC−1), providing extended evening daylight from late March to late October.

Importance and Global Use of EGST

EGST was valuable for helping residents in Ittoqqortoormiit and nearby settlements make better use of the extended daylight during Arctic summers. By shifting one hour forward, EGST supported smoother scheduling for local businesses, public services, transport, and seasonal activities that rely on maximizing daylight in a challenging environment.

Although its use was geographically limited, EGST also maintained consistent time references for international coordination, including shipping, scientific research missions, and Arctic governance efforts. By providing a predictable daylight saving schedule, it supported Greenland's integration with global partners and contributed to reliable cross-border communication and planning in polar regions.
